Timex “Next Generation in Time Keeping” TEASE

Timex released a short video teasing the “Next Generation in Time Keeping”

The video doesn’t tell us much and has been met with little fanfare. Timex definitely didnt use the same marketing agency Apple did for its “1984” Commercial. There won’t be much speculation as what this could be solely due it coming from a brand like Timex.

One commenter mentioned how the audience reactions poorly timed up with what was actually being shown. So 1) poor editing 2) poor delivery of the teaser trailer. This whole thing seems to me like a knockoff and low budget version of Audemars Piguet 11.59 teaser which was an absolute flop.

Audemars Piguet started teasing an entire new collection with the slogan “Challenge. Own. Dare. Evolve.” A lot of hype and buzz was generated with expectations that a new Royal Oak would surface. BUUUTTTT it didn’t and it was followed by many memes on Instagram.

Seems as if all watch brands are taking notes from kickstarter on how to disrupt the market. For watches it’s hard to be innovative especially in the affordables category. Breguet, Patek, AP have a larger budget to innovate but Timex sells affordable watches and majority of them under are $100 so how long will it take to recover their research and development costs?

This release can go one of two ways:

  1. Massive release met by amazing reviews similar to when the Timex Marlin Reissue was released
  2. Embarrassing Flop

So there are some rumblings on Watchuseek and one post from user “cayabo” mentions that Tappy Technologies, a wearable and digital payments solution provider, has partnered with Timex. Watches will now be turned into a credit or debit card, by using a battery-less chip that can even be placed on watch straps allowing even more users to be able to use the technology. This is the tech watches need and definitely something Apple will use in their iwatch, they love their “ApplePay” and “Apple Wallet”.

I am excited to see this come to fruition and it’s exciting to see Timex taking the lead on incorporating new technology into their watches.

Watch out for more details on this to come.
