COACH x Michael B. Jordan

Coach is trying to get back on the map by doing a colab with Michael B. Jordan.

Coach was HUGE back in the mid-2000’s, peaked and overproduced bags which they ended up shipping to outlet stores where the brand lost its expensive appeal. Outlets are terrible moves for a brand, they ultimately encourage buyers not to pay the full price and make the items so accessible the brand loses its exclusive appeal. Coach can attribute its collapse to this and Michael Kors emerging on the scene. Coach is trying its hardest to rebuild its image and this colab is just one way it is trying to do that.

Michael B. Jordan. (No relation to Michael Jordan) is a actor most notably known for his leading role in Black Panther and Creed. Jordan is the first male face of Coach because prior to the brand doing anything to increase sales by appealing to men, prior to this it was heavily geared toward women. That distinction will be hard to shake off in its attempts to become a unisex brand.

I recommend watching this Vogue “73 Questions” Video with Jordan.

Let’s get into this Colab, I picked 3 items that really stood out to me.

The Rivington Backpack.

Available for Pre-order and shipping February 21, 2019 for $595 and in two colors; Charcoal/Black Copper and Khaki/Black Copper.

A mix of canvas, Cordura fabric, refined calf leather and big enough to fit a 15” laptop I think this is the best item of the colab. Awesome colors used here and I think the Khaki/Black Copper is straight from Jordan’s mind using green and purple.

Colorblock Shearling Jacket

Coach Colorblock Shearling Jacket

in Burnt Sienna $2,200

This is a cool jacket sadly very very out of my price range. Target has a few similar styles to this Shearling Jacket except they do not have purple which I think makes the jacket pop. Nonetheless jacket looks super comfortable but I think $2,200 can be better spent.

C143 Runner with Coach Patch $250

These sneakers are soo cool. Modern and the use of colors here are perfect. Definitely go with black or blue jeans.

What would we like to see from this colab?

Wallets and watches. Maybe some key-fobs. But wallets and watches are super simple and easy items to use for a collaboration. Coach already has men’s wallets and watches. So it wouldn’t be hard to produce a wallet/card case or watch using the colors from Rivington Backpack. I like the color purple but in small doses. So imagine a watch using purple for the hands, green for the dial and a suede tan strap.
